Shop Boy Explains…why coming back from leave is torture

…why coming back from leave is torture

I have just gone back to work after six days off for moving / a wedding and can easily say that there is nothing worse, in the entire world, than your first day back at work.

It is absolute hell.

You go from being at the point where you have just managed to catch up on sleep, get relaxed and be somewhat enjoying your life and then bam, you are thrust back into the torture of finger-spacing racks and abusive customers.

Today was my first time walking to work from our new house and I was excited to have fifteen minutes with only my iPod as a companion to clear my head and get myself in a positive place for work.

Surprisingly, it worked.

I walked into work, coffee in hand, twenty minutes after leaving the house and was happy with my new life, in our new house.

Then I saw my area, which after six days without me, was looking a little worse for wear.

My utopian mind frame was completely shattered.

Working fulltime in such a small area, you become very anal and like things done a certain way. Coming back from almost a week away you realise that you shouldn’t really bother.

Different people have different standards and opinions on how to do things.

It is the realisation that all you have worked for leading up to your time off to make things perfectly how you like them, is pointless as the people that work while you are away have different ways of doing things.

I’m sure this is the point where I am meant to learn some profound lesson about tolerance and accepting differences.

Tolerant or not, it doesn’t dull the pain of going back to the hell of work.
