Bargain Bin Bonanza: Far by Regina Spektor

I love Regina Spektor.

She is the perfect blend of kook, heartfelt and fun…which is the combination of traits I aspire to be made up of.

To celebrate my new life goal I thought it only appropriate to review one of her albums. That and it was the third CD that I bought in my 3 for $20 deal at JB a while back.

The album I am referring to is Far, Ms. Spektor’s fifth studio album and as Far as I can tell (see what I did there?), it is just as awesomely Spektor-esque as her previous four.

The opening beat of the opening track reminds me of the theme music of Play School. That is a good thing. It fills you with an infectious joy despite being about love and hurt…and that, in my opinion is what makes Regina Spektor so special.

You can be so saddened by what she is singing about but uplifted by the way she is presenting it to us. It is a nice little seesaw that she manages to wrangle perfectly without making her music become a genre-confused mess.

My current favourite tracks are “Dance Anthem of the 80s”, “Folding Chair” and “The Calculation”. Why? I can’t really say...they just make me want to dance while I type.

I give Spektor 4 discount stickers and an epic 80s dance break.

Fun fact, in making this album Spektor decided to use multiple producers so that the focus was on the music and not what the main hit would be.

I like that.
