Faustus is the story of Doctor, you guessed it, Faustus who sold his soul to the devil for knowledge and pleasure.
The famous Doctor and his bargaining with Lucifer have led to countless plays, operas, films and novels and Michael Gow has drawn upon all that has proceeded him to create this schizophrenic little number.
The latest co-production from Queensland Theatre Company and Bell Shakespeare is awesome and I feel lucky to have had the pleasure of watching it without having to lose my soul for all eternity.
It was like watching a crack-addled episode of Mad Men set in hell with a killer soundtrack and the rabbit from Donnie Darko. That is a good thing.
Stylistically it is amazing. The set and masks are awesome and are an organic extension of the Powerhouse Theatre in New Farm. The videos and music are utilized to perfection and are insanely well done. The cast are exceptional with Ben Winspear and John Bell shining, anchoring the production and breathing a delicious exuberance to their characters.
Faustus is a rollicking good time at the theatre and I urge you all to go and see it.
Faustus is playing at the Powerhouse Theatre in New Farm until the 25th of June and is devilishly good night at the theatre (sorry, I had to). Plus you can enjoy the World Press Photos in the foyer before the show.
I believe this is what Charlie Sheen meant when he spoke of winning.
