Spotted on the Selling Floor: Maxine McKew

Last night the Logie Awards celebrated journalism far more than they usually do. The Most Popular Presenter Award and Gold Logie were awarded to Karl Stefanovic of Channel Nine’s Today, while Nine’s Political Editor Laurie Oakes was inducted into the Hall of Fame (good night for Nine…and haven’t they driven that point home in today’s bulletins).

While the Logies are more about popularity, rather than skill (and I’m not saying these men are not extremely talented), some dismiss them as a C-List Award Show. However I believe the increased exposure and celebration of journalists at this year’s awards should still be viewed as an inspiration to those pursuing a career within the field.

Anyway, to celebrate the current love Australia seems to have with journalists, I decided that this week I would tell stories of the times I have been face to face with two of my biggest career crushes while at work.

Today is all about former ABC heavyweight (and former ALP MP) Maxine McKew.

Sadly there would be some people who would only remember Maxine for being the person to unseat then-PM John Howard at the 2007 Federal Election, rather than the supremely talented journalist she was for the 30-something years preceding this event.

I can assure you I had not forgotten this fact.

One Friday late last year I was walking down the escalators to check something downstairs / avoid work when I spotted her. At first I thought my eyes were deceiving me; surely Maxine McKew isn’t shopping in our store. Doesn’t she live in Epping?

I slowly walked closer for a better inspection, in retrospect I would have looked insanely creepy and well, insane. “It’s her,” I gasped in my head. What an earth am I meant to do? I mean I was within feet of a Walkley award winner (I’ve taken their phone calls before too…but that’s another story), who was also the woman that unseated the brows. Holy crap!

I’m embarrassed to continue this story.

You see while I thought I gasped, “it’s her,” in my head, the reality of what happened was far worse.

“Oh-my-God-eeek-it’s Maxine-McKew-I-love-her….ahhhhhh,” is what I exclaimed…out loud.

Most of these noises I wasn’t aware a 23-year-old male could make anymore…neither it seems, was Maxine, who after a strange look in my direction, was away.

I really need to learn to control my excitement, and my noises, a little bit better.
