Bargain Bin Bonanza: Diamond Dogs by David Bowie

Welcome back to part two in my Bowie appreciation series.

Again…how I didn’t own any of his complete albums puzzles me, but I am proud to say I have rectified that grave mistake.

This week, we take a look at Bowie’s 1974 album, and glam rock farewell, Diamond Dogs.

Upon doing a bit of research I discovered that this album was inspired, in part, by George Orwell’s novel 1984 and while I hate that book with the fire of a thousand suns, I can see and appreciate the influence.

The guitar and melody are thumping and chaotic which works in perfectly with the futuristic, post-apocalyptic Orwell influence. This album, in my opinion, is proof, more so than any of his others, of just how well Bowie thinks out his music and how talented he is at structuring his albums for ultimate impact.

My favourite tracks which I loved before owning the album, Rebel Rebel and Diamond Dogs have not changed after listening to the album in it’s entirety. Rebel Rebel has the Stones-esque rhythm (maybe because, allegedly, Bowie and Mick slept together around the time of this album’s creation) that makes me so happy. And well, Diamond Dogs is…Diamond Dogs. It is amazing.

Bowie never ceases to amaze me and this album scores him four stars and a slight Jagger swagger for the Stones influence.
