Bargain Bin Bonanza: Aladdin Sane by David Bowie

After the wedding I went to a couple of weeks ago, which was home to the greatest soundtrack of all time, I came to the horrific (and embarrassing) realisation that I didn’t own any Bowie albums.

To rectify this travesty, I went into JB on my first break after the wedding and bought three of Bowie’s best. All of which were priced at a cheeky $9.99.

Today is the first of three of my ‘I love Bowie and why the hell didn’t I own any of his albums earlier’ posts, beginning with the 1973 album Aladdin Sane.

Aladdin Sane is the follow up to the mega hit (which I will get to another time), Ziggy Stardust and in my opinion is underrated…thus my review appearing before my Ziggy one.

It has all the hallmarks of Bowie’s greatest but without the fear. It is like he realised how much of a star he was after Ziggy and that he should just go all out and do what he wants on this album.

That is it’s greatest strength.

The rhythm and percussion drive the songs and make you want to dance like a crazy man, while his vocals are nothing short of perfection.

My favourite songs are Lady Grinning Soul, Jean Genie and Watch That Man. Not because they are any better than the others, but because I can really do some awesome dance moves to accompany them. Think Kate Bush, Babushka style moves for Lady Grinning Soul…epic.

Maybe it is guilt talking, but this album is easily five stars for Bowie and makes me want to get a lightning bolt tattooed down my face.

It’s perfection…not guilt.
